Impact and performance framework

Measures that connect commercial performance to social outcomes the enterprise can evidence, report and improve over time.

Impact that can be evidenced

Social enterprises are asked to prove both commercial performance and community benefit—often to different audiences with different definitions of success. An impact and performance framework settles what will be measured, why it matters, how data will be collected without crushing a small organisation, and how learning will feed management and board decisions. It resists vanity metrics and respects cultural definitions of benefit that may not fit neatly into generic social-return templates designed elsewhere.

Amity National builds frameworks that serve the enterprise first and external reporting second. If a measure does not help the organisation improve or account to its community, it should earn its place carefully and be retired when it no longer earns its keep.

Commercial and social lines of sight

The framework typically links inputs and activities to outputs, outcomes and—where credible—longer-term impact, alongside commercial indicators such as pipeline health, margin quality, contract performance, cash timing and capability markers. Blended-value logic is made visible: how commercial strength funds enduring benefit, and how community outcomes reinforce licence to operate with integrity.

We help choose a small set of lead and lag indicators, define data sources, assign owners, and set a reporting rhythm that boards will actually read. Where evaluation design, statistical methods or assurance require specialist expertise, Amity coordinates appropriately qualified advisers. We do not claim independent audit or clinical evaluation credentials we do not hold, and we do not present measurement theatre as proof.

Cultural integrity in measurement

For Aboriginal organisations, what counts as success may include cultural continuity, local employment quality, care of Country, and community authority over decisions—not only contract KPIs written by a buyer. The framework makes space for qualitative evidence and community feedback loops, and it guards against extractive data practices that take stories without consent or reciprocity. Consent and storytelling protocols are treated as design requirements, not optional extras.

Performance conversations are framed as learning, not blame, so teams surface problems early enough to fix them before partners or funders discover them through a failed milestone or a damaged relationship.

Honest use of the framework

An impact and performance framework improves clarity, accountability and the prospect of credible reporting to partners and funders. It does not guarantee that outcomes will be achieved, that funders will accept the chosen measures, or that commercial targets will be met. External decisions remain external. Amity’s role is to leave a usable measurement habit inside the enterprise, aligned to its operating model and governance, so reporting does not depend on a permanent external author.

When the framework is working, directors can see whether the organisation is earning sustainably and benefiting community as intended—and staff know which numbers and stories they are responsible for keeping true under cultural and commercial scrutiny alike.

Reporting that boards and communities can trust

Frameworks collapse when reporting becomes a performance for outsiders and a mystery to insiders. We design a board pack rhythm and a community-facing explanation of what is being tracked and why, in language that respects both commercial confidentiality and cultural protocols. Indicators are few enough to maintain, and each has an owner who can explain the number or the story behind a qualitative measure.

When partners request additional metrics, the framework provides a filter: adopt, adapt, or decline with reasons. Where specialist evaluation or assurance is required, Amity coordinates appropriately qualified advisers rather than claiming credentials we do not hold. The framework improves accountability and learning; it does not guarantee that outcomes will be achieved, that funders will accept every measure, or that commercial targets will be met.
